American Ultra

Just like with the The Gift, this trailer does not give the movie its due.    While Mike (Jesse Eisenberg) may like to smoke a little weed, he's no major stoner.  He lives with his girlfriend Phoebe (Kristen Stewart) in a little Rand University of a town.  While working at the local quick stop, he recieves a mysterious visitor warning him away.    He doesn't understand the warning.

But when he sees 2 men trying to mess with his beater of a car, he ends up killing them, Jason Bourne style.  Like Bourne, he doesn't know why he is able to do what he does.  He goes home to get Phoebe, and they go on the run.

There's some nice Tarantino Kill Bill action here which adds to the Manchurian Candidate plotline.  Better than expected.

  1. Sorry Turley but I give this one a 2 star at most because of the better than expected acting but the plot development is lacking. Topher Grace is almost a caricature of a villain and while the production set does a good good job of converting a sleepy town into a war zone, there is no explanation or background on the characters we care about the most. I want to know how the two main characters were trained in combat, why the attraction by Stewart's character, why their boss at the CIA cared so much for them. That would have made for a better movie instead of feeling you were set up for a trilogy.

By the way, the town is namer Liman, a not so subtle homage to the director they are imitating, Doug Liman from the Bourne Trilogy.
